This time of year usually reeks for me - trails are muddy, fish aren't biting and all I can do is stay warm in front of yet another bowl game on TV. It's not a good month - I just want to get out and DO SOMETHING!
Starting today at the San Mateo Expo Center across the Bay, the International Sportsman's Exposition runs through Sunday, Jan. 11. I'm going to be roaming the show Satyrday afternoon, looking for some deals on fishing stuff, camping stuff....maybe an Argentine vacation on Cerro Aconcagua. There's a lot to see, a ton of special presentations and events, something for everyone except the couchbound.
I'm partial to the California Outdoors Hall of Fame induction Saturday at 4 PM. As a 2007 inductee myself, I enjoy meeting the new members and those who will be honored posthumously. The SF Chronicle's Tom Stienstra will once again MC this prestigious ceremony. And he's got a few of his wonderful books and guides, created and evolved over a lifetime of hiking, hunting, camping, fishing and exploring. I have the last 3 updates of his California Lakes book - I'm sure he'll have the latest versions with him.
I usually refer to the show as the Official End of the Holiday Season. This is it - if you're a camper, adventurer, fisherman or hunter, don't miss this show. See you there!
